During this time of crisis, the single most important way we can help our communities and the world is by taking care of our health. By taking up as little medical resources as possible, we're allowing those resources to be used up by someone who is critically sick. I know that its really easy to stay up late, sleep in, and become lazy during this time because its basically summer break with classes. However, if we continue down this path, we are risking damage to our immune system which will make us more prone to the coronavirus. There are two very important parts to taking care of our health: the mind and the body.
It is very crucial to keep our minds sharp during this rough time. We must acknowledge that as soon as this crisis passes, we will have to continue on with our lives so keeping the mind sharp will help with that transition. There are a few ways that you can accomplish this. First, for all of us who are taking classes, making sure you do all of your school work to the best of your ability, which will make sure that we are prepared for the next semester. Many classes build on top of each other so by building that base and doing tasks to the best of our ability, we will not fall behind and be ready. Secondly, doing something challenging each day helps. For me, I started this blog to mentally challenge myself every day and share my opinions. This helps keep my mind sharp and flowing during this time. Doing word crosses, playing strategical games, or having a creative output such as painting or drawing are all amazing ways to accomplish this! Even basketball players, like Bradley Beal and Donovan Mitchell, are watching highlights of themselves to see what they can improve on and what they're already good at to gain more insight. The third and most crucial way is continuous and open communication with our friends and family. Obviously with social distancing, snap chatting or messaging your friends is the best way to stay connected but take advantage of this time you have with your family and make a stronger bond. Personally, my family sits down together at the end of the day and watch Shark Tank or some other thing together! All of these steps help with anxiety and depression that you might feel about this whole situation.
Additionally, the body is as equally important as the mind. Everyone has goals for their body in mind and what better time to accomplish them than now! We can all eat healthy because of the amount of time we have on our hands (perhaps even learn how to cook healthy meals) and exercise AT LEAST an hour. Remember, eating an orange is a great source of Vitamin C which boosts our immunity. Some ways you can accomplish an hour of exercise is by going on a walk around your neighborhood (but keep that 6 ft distance), going outside and shooting hoops for a while with your siblings or by yourself, running on the treadmill, lifting weights, doing crossfit, and etc.! Be creative with it so you don't bore yourself. Not only will exercising enhance your mood and make you feel better, but you will see changes in your body that you've always wanted. Furthermore, meditation and yoga are great activities to combine components of the body and mind. These activities help decrease tension in your muscles while also decreasing stress.
Keeping your mind and body healthy during this time is extremely important, not only for yourself but for the community and the world! Remember, this time will pass and one day, we'll laugh looking at what we did during this time. What are some ways that you're keeping healthy during this time?
